The cosmetology students at Dolce have a unique opportunity to design three different hairstyles and headpieces to pair with outfits and makeup. They also get to choose their own theme for the competition – a few this year are “The Great Gatsby,” “American Muscle Cars” and “Carnival.” Winning themes in the past were “Fantasy” intricate up-dos, “Beautiful Disaster” storm-inspired styles and “Steam Punk” science fiction creativity.
It is a great event for our Dolce students to demonstrate all they have learned as aspiring cosmetologists enrolled in our program. The students’ designs will be judged this year by Wella Professional Educators for the chance to attend a color and cutting workshop at the New York Wella Studio. Wella Professionals is a German hair care company, specializing in hair care, coloring and styling for over 130 years. It is an honor to have them as our judges!
Additional proceeds fund the visits of various guest educators in the field of cosmetology throughout the course of our academic year, so all students are rewarded by the event whether selected as the overall winner or not.
This year, we have an especially large group of students participating. There will be 75 models present and plenty of student designs to view. The event is open to the public, so anyone who is interested in avant-garde hairstyling and supporting the efforts of local students is welcome to attend.
The fourth annual Dolce Awards are June 2 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 pre-sale, $25 at the door or $10 for children under 10 and can be purchased at The Academy, located at 2457 East Main Street, Waterbury.
